Nite Owl and Silk Spectre chat about nuclear war and what happened earlier in the evening in issue seven of Watchmen
As he had done with Steve Bissette while working on Swamp Thing, Alan Moore used Gibbons’s artistic gifts to further the story. His art is linear and direct, with a literalism that belies the seriousness of the story. Most pages were multipaneled and many contained no words. Artistically, Watchmen was more colorful than Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. The vision offered in Watchmen was, ultimately, more optimistic. Watchmen was originally serialized in twelve high-priced issues, and then collected as a graphic novel in 1987. With the duo of Dark Knight and Watchmen, DC Comics was able to attract readers outside of comic book stores. Articles about the books appeared in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, the Los Angeles Times, and other mainstream publications. In 1988, Watchmen was awarded the Hugo, a prestigious science fiction award.
Dark Knight received wider media coverage, sold more, and was ultimately more accessible to mainstream readers than Watchmen. The longevity of the Batman character and the popularity of the 1960s TV show made it possible for most readers to jump right into Frank Miller’s updated version. To really understand what Moore and Gibbons were saying in Watchmen, one had to be familiar with the superhero construct itself. But both Watchmen and Dark Knight had at least one message in common: don’t get caught in a dark alley with someone choosing to wear a mask and fight crime. He wouldn’t necessarily turn out to be a nice guy or anyone that you could depend on. In fact, his sanity was probably held together with masking tape.
